Girl – Child

In 1993 a total of 130 million children had no access to primary education and 81 million were girls.

Facts facing the girl-child:

  • Customary attitudes
  • Many female foetuses are aborted or subjected malnutrition to encourage the growth of the male child.
  • Often girls are subjected to sexual abuse at a young age
  • Girls often lack education compared to their counterparts
  • Young girls are subjected to premature sex and early marriage.
  • Pregnancy at a young age
  • Sexual violence and sexually transmitted diseases
  • Lack of legal protection and non-enforcement of laws.

Recommendations

  • Create gender sensitive classrooms
  • Educated on rights concerning such issues as rape, incest, physical abuse, etc…
  • Governments should promote a policy that can be seen to incorporate a gender perspective before making decisions. This will facilitate removal of all barriers to enable girls to develop themselves in all spheres of education.

Progress for the Girl Child in Botswana

Girl-Child

When progress is made in the other areas then progress is made for the girl child. The area of girl child encompasses many of the other critical areas, such as, education, violence and health.

Who is addressing this area?

Organizations that are fighting for the rights of women are also helping the girl child indirectly. The YWCA specifically deals with youth.
